Quirks: Will get in the trash if she knows you aren't home

Quenya is my heart dog. She’s as much my friend as my pet, and I love her so much I can’t even think how to write about it. She is smart, playful, sweet, concerned and loyal to a fault. She loves humans and likes other dogs, enjoys hiking and swimming and going everywhere with me that she can. Quenya severed one of her hind tendons when she was four years old. While it healed enough that it doesn’t impair her quality of life, she was not sound for sports after that. We gave Rally a go, but I could tell she didn’t enjoy the slower, pawstep-by-pawstep pace of it. We found Dog Parkour and we are currently working towards our first title!

I got Quenya right after I completed my first two years at college and was transferring to a four-year program. I wasn’t done with my degree but still, it seemed a significant enough achievement that I wanted to reward myself. I had grown up with dogs and we had a family Pug at the time, but I wanted a dog that I chose all by myself (it was my version of 17-year-old rebellion). I had a job working part-time as a daycare teacher and knew I could afford to care for a dog but I didn’t have a very large savings to drop in payment for the dog itself. I put out a “looking for” ad on the internet and one of the first replies was from a young woman who had a personal emergency and needed a home for her 2 year old Kelpie cross. I drove an hour down to meet her at a gas station and fell in love with the foxy-faced dog that greeted me (and every other human around) like I ran the world. She came home with me that day and since then she has been my very best friend and the closest thing to a real life Lassie that could possibly exist.
